Day 1: Arrival to Zagreb

Arrival to Zagreb airport or train station, followed by private transfer to your hotel. After a short rest, join your private expert local guide and start exploring the key architectural, urban and artistic areas of metropolitan Zagreb, a city of many stories. Enjoy your stroll through popular Tkalčićeva Street, walk to the delightful Kamenita Vrata, and visit St. Mark’s Church with its brilliant multicolor tile roof. Don’t miss the eclectic collection of the quirky Museum of Broken Relationships while at the Upper Town. And no visit to Zagreb can ever be complete without a stop and a chat with kumice (friendly local ladies from neighboring villages selling their home grown produce and home-made milk, cheeses, bread and other delicacies) at the vibrant Dolac market. Spend the rest of the day discovering more of Zagreb, one corner at a time, on your own, at your pace. Don’t forget to do what people in Zagreb do: find your best spot in any of the numerous chic cafes, order a cup of cappuccino (although we prefer “kava sa šlagom”, a special kind of Croatian whipped cream) and just sit and relax for as long as you please. And if you really want to feel what this city is really all about, keep on watching, listening, sipping coffee, and pretty much doing absolutely nothing. Zagreb is a perfect place to enjoy a variety of Croatian food specialties, and you your experience will not be complete without dining at some of its many great restaurants offering both authentic Croatian cuisine, as well as typical regional specialties with a modern twist. There are many choices and some really wonderful restaurants that have been in business for decades but many of them that are brand new, as well. And if the next day you feel like doing the same, don’t panic, you are doing everything right to become completely absorbed in the local like of Zagreb!

Day 2: Zagreb/Varaždin & Zagorje Countryside/Zagreb

Today is reserved for a full day excursion to the city of Varaždin and the countryside of Zagorje in the vicinity of Zagreb. After breakfast, start your exploration in the company of a driver and a local expert guide. Formerly the capital of Croatia, Varaždin is a small baroque town just a short drive north from Zagreb. During the month of October, Varaždin hosts “Baroque Evenings”, with live orchestral music, traditional military dress, and fireworks. There is no real “mass” tourism, and inexpensive cafes, museums, and a majestic medieval castle sit amid a stunning collection of intact Baroque buildings- one of the finest examples left in all of Europe. Additionally, those traveling in late August can experience Spancirfest, a street festival that lasts for 10 days into the beginning of September. During this time, Varaždin hosts over 100,000 visitors from all over the country and the world. The town’s center is turned into an entertainment zone housing concerts, shopping kiosks, street performers, and pop-up eateries. Next, you visit Zagorje with a charming Trakošćan castle, and always mysterious Veliki Tabor castle. After a short drive by the private driver through the fascinating rolling hills, small vineyards, quaint villages and tiny farms, we reach Trakošćan, the best preserved castle in Croatia. This small castle was built in the late XIII century as part of the defense fortification network of the Zagorje region and it served as Western Europe’s border against Turkish army. Visit the castle in the company of your expert local guide, and admire the beautiful lake and the forest surrounding it.

Next, we take you to a village Gornja Stubica (this is optional and not included in price) for a delicious lunch of traditional Zagorje specialties; turkey or duck with mlinci and zagorski štrukli or any other authentic delicacy followed by tasting of local wines.  Return to Zagreb.

Day 3: Zagreb/Rastoke & Plitvice/Zagreb

In the company of your private driver travel to Plitvice with a stop at the village of Rastoke.  This small village is situated at the mouth of the river Slunjčica, which flows into the river Korana. A series of small waterfalls, rapids and basins are created by travertine barriers. Admire numerous mills, which date back to the 17th century. Due to its architectural heritage, ethnographic and historical value, as well as its natural beauty, in 1969, Rastoke was declared a cultural monument. It is breathtaking in its natural beauty, cuisine and traditions, and we are sure that you will enjoy it with all of your senses. Explore the settlement by walking along the trails overlooking the waterfalls and rapids and enjoy the beauty of nature. The Korana River is the ideal place for whitewater rafting, canoeing and kayaking. In Rastoke, today, there are approximately 30 households, which were renovated and are well preserved to keep intact the traditions of this region. You can be a witness to the past lives of the people in this area and experience how they once lived, what they ate and even how they arranged their dining room and bedrooms. A number of the restaurants offer traditional dishes from this region, such as homemade polenta from the Rastoke mills, trout, lamb, venison, homemade bread, noodles and strudel. Next, visit the exquisite Plitvice Lakes National Park, and in the company of your local expert guide enjoy the amazing beauty of one of Europe’s largest nature reserve parks. Plitvice is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a fantastic place to get outdoors and experience the lush green landscapes and fresh air in Croatia. Walk, hike or bike your way through the park and enjoy the emerald green waters and bubbling waterfalls that characterize this gorgeous park.  Return to Zagreb.
